Launched by Eric Karwisch and Clancy Hathaway out of the Kansas City CSz operation, the franchise drew its founding ensemble from existing St. Louis improv groups and established competitive short-form improv as regular entertainment in the St. Louis market. History

Founding (1998)

ComedySportz St. Louis launched in fall 1998 at Union Station, with Eric Karwisch (formerly of ComedySportz Indianapolis) leading artistic direction and Clancy Hathaway managing the business side out of the Kansas City CSz operation. The founding ensemble drew from existing St. Louis improv groups including Madding Crowd, Brand X, and City Improv.

Organizational Disruptions (1999–2000)

Following a national ComedySportz organizational shake-up in late 1999, the St. Louis franchise briefly rebranded as ComedyCity. A venue dispute in early 2000 prompted a further split, with some performers reopening under the CITY Improv name. The CSz franchise was subsequently restored and the organization stabilized.

Ongoing Operations

ComedySportz St. Louis continues to operate in the St. Louis metropolitan area, currently based in Maryland Heights, presenting competitive shows, classes, and corporate training under the CSz Worldwide banner.

Artistic Identity

ComedySportz St. Louis presents competitive short-form improv in the CSz Worldwide format, describing itself as "Comedy for EVERYONE." Two teams compete in improv games before a referee with audience scoring. Class programming and corporate training extend the franchise's reach beyond public performance.
