Dad Company Improv was founded in Mobile, Alabama in 2020 by four performers who are also fathers and who found themselves with unexpected free time during the early COVID-19 pandemic. The group consists of Chip, a teacher and veteran improviser with more than twenty years of experience who co-founded a previous Mobile improv collective called Improv Comedy Underground (ICU); Steven, also a co-founder of ICU with comparable experience who serves as the group's technical designer; Barney, a lawyer with decades of community theater involvement at venues including Chickasaw Civic Theatre and Joe Jefferson Playhouse; and Lesley, a theater educator at Bayside Academy in Daphne, Alabama. The quartet performs long-form one-act improvised plays constructed entirely from audience suggestions with no scripted material.

Dad Company Improv operates as Mobile's primary dedicated long-form improv performance group and has expanded its touring reach to include performances across Alabama, Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee, and Virginia, giving the ensemble a regional footprint unusual for a company based in a mid-sized Gulf Coast city. The group's founding drew on the institutional memory of Improv Comedy Underground, connecting a new organization to Mobile's existing amateur improv tradition. No alumni have been publicly documented with careers outside the ensemble.
