Improv Club Yangon
Improv Club Yangon was a Yangon improv comedy club founded in 2015 by Martin Zdarek, operating as Myanmar's improv performance and workshop venue before the 2021 military coup.
History
Improv Club Yangon was founded in Yangon in 2015 by Martin Zdarek, creating the first improv comedy organisation in Myanmar. The club operated as the city's dedicated improv performance and workshop venue through a period of relative liberalisation in Myanmar. Following the military coup of February 2021, which severely disrupted civil society and the performing arts sector, the club is likely to have ceased operations. Its years of activity demonstrated that improv could take root in a Southeast Asian context with no prior tradition of the form.
Artistic Identity
Improv Club Yangon operated as Myanmar's founding improv organisation, running performance and workshop programming in Yangon during the country's period of civil society expansion prior to 2021.
