Leela Improv Theatre Raleigh is the North Carolina location of Leela, a long-form improv institution founded in San Francisco in 2003 by Jill Eickmann and Christopher Eickmann. The Raleigh location opened in 2025 at 309 N Boylan Ave in the Glenwood South neighborhood, offering weekly classes, drop-in sessions, and First Friday jams rooted in the heart-centered long-form improv tradition Leela developed over twenty years in San Francisco.
History
Parent Organization: Leela San Francisco (2003)
Jill Mueller (now Jill Eickmann) and Christopher Eickmann founded Lila Theatre in San Francisco in February 2003, later renaming it Leela. Over two decades, they built a long-form improv institution with a resident company, conservatory, and regularly sold-out shows rooted in the San Francisco improv tradition, including the Harold lineage and influences from The Committee.
Raleigh Expansion (2023-2025)
In 2023, Leela began offering classes and corporate training in the Raleigh/Triangle area of North Carolina. In 2025, a full second location opened at 309 N Boylan Ave in Glenwood South, Raleigh, with weekly drop-in classes and First Friday jams. A fully equipped black box theater is planned for the space.
Ongoing Operations
Leela Raleigh continues to operate at 309 N Boylan Ave, offering long-form improv training for Triangle-area students as an extension of the Leela curriculum developed in San Francisco.
Artistic Identity
Leela's approach is described as "heart-centered" long-form improv, drawing on the San Francisco tradition including the Harold lineage and the influence of The Committee and Del Close. The curriculum emphasizes authenticity, ensemble listening, and community belonging alongside technical improv development. This approach distinguishes Leela from game-based or short-form schools, positioning it as a theatrical and personal development institution.
