Founding (1999)

Gary Kramer founded National Comedy Theatre in October 1999 at 3717 India Street in San Diego's Mission Hills neighborhood, a venue the company has occupied ever since. The show presents professional comedians performing scenes entirely based on audience suggestions in a competitive format.

Milestones

National Comedy Theatre logged its 5,000th performance in March 2017. By its 25th anniversary in 2024 the company had exceeded 7,000 total performances, establishing it as the longest-running show in San Diego history.

New York and Corporate Expansion

Kramer opened a New York City branch of National Comedy Theatre in 2004. The company developed the WITS corporate training workshop program, delivered nationally and virtually.

National Comedy Theatre presents professional short-form competitive improv based entirely on audience suggestions, with an all-ages family-friendly commitment. Its unbroken 25-year run at a single Mission Hills venue and record of 7,000+ performances define its position in San Diego's comedy landscape.

Main Stage Show: the flagship Friday and Saturday competitive short-form improv performance, running continuously since October 1999 with over 7,000 total shows, making it the longest-running show in San Diego history. Sunday Company Show: a weekly alternative short- and long-form improv program. Improvised Musical: a recurring format combining spontaneous musical composition with improv scenes. House Teams show series: monthly performances by the theater's emerging cast on the first two Thursdays of each month. Armed Forces Entertainment international tours: performances in Iraq, Egypt, Belgium, Greece, Turkey, Italy, and Spain for military audiences. Connections: a weekly improv class and performance program for autism spectrum teens and young adults ages 15 to 24, run through the Unscripted Learning non-profit since 2017. Active Minds: a weekly two-hour improv session for seniors focused on cognitive enhancement and social connection.

National Comedy Theatre, founded in October 1999 by Gary Kramer at a formerly shuttered India Street venue he financed on maxed credit cards, became San Diego's most enduring live comedy institution, surpassing the previous record for longest-running San Diego show several years before its 2017 milestone of 5,000 performances. Longtime cast member Dave George has performed since opening night in 1999, and Alan Ng joined in 2002, giving the institution a continuity of performers rare in short-form improv venues. The New York branch, which operated from 2004 to 2014 on 36th Street, presented the NCT format Off-Broadway and demonstrated the model's portability beyond its San Diego home.

In 2017, Kramer established Unscripted Learning as a non-profit arm, creating structured improv programs for autism spectrum youth through the Connections series and for seniors through Active Minds, extending the theater's social impact well beyond entertainment. The WITS corporate training program has brought NCT's methodology to organizations ranging from startups to Fortune 500 companies, building a revenue-diversified institutional model that has sustained 25-plus years of continuous weekly performances in the same building.
