History
Community Origins (1993)
Planet Ant began in 1993 as a coffee house and artist community at 2357 Caniff Avenue in Hamtramck. In its early years the space hosted open-mic nights; Jack White was a frequent participant in these gatherings. The space converted to a full theatre in 1996.
Improv Colony and Improv Mondays (2000)
In 2000 Joshua Funk directed Sardines, the first original comedy show created through improvisation at the space, and co-founded the Improv Colony with Nancy Hayden and Margaret Edwartowski. The ensemble launched Improv Mondays, which became Detroit's longest-running improv show.
Multidisciplinary Expansion
Planet Ant expanded beyond improv into theatrical productions, a record label, and film production, developing the three-story building into a full artist community. The organization's improv alumni include Keegan-Michael Key, Marc Evan Jackson, Sam Richardson, Tim Robinson, and Jamie Moyer.
Artistic Identity
Planet Ant Theatre combines improv comedy with scripted theatrical productions, music, and film under one roof in Hamtramck. Its Improv Colony and the long-running Improv Mondays show have made Planet Ant the primary incubator of Detroit-area comedy talent across three decades.
Legacy
Planet Ant Theatre's improv and comedy alumni have become nationally prominent in television, film, and performance, including Keegan-Michael Key (Key and Peele), Marc Evan Jackson, Sam Richardson, and Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave). The organization's founding in a Detroit-area coffee house and its evolution into a multidisciplinary home establish it as a distinctive model within American regional improv.
