The Half-Boiled Inc is a Chennai-based improv comedy company co-founded by stand-up comedian Bhargav Ramakrishnan and Subramanian Aravind, incorporated as Half Boiled Arts Private Limited in July 2019. The company introduced improv comedy to Chennai audiences through the Half-Boiled Improv Show and later co-launched The Spotted Hyena, a dedicated comedy club at Club Crest in Velachery. The Half-Boiled Inc is credited with inspiring the formation of The Hysterical, Chennai's first all-women improv ensemble.
History
Bhargav Ramakrishnan, a Chennai-based stand-up comedian, began organising improv performances in the city around 2017, when the format was newly emerging in Chennai's comedy scene. Half Boiled Arts Private Limited was formally incorporated on 10 July 2019 with Ramakrishnan and Subramanian Aravind as directors. The company's flagship show ran at The Spotted Hyena venue in Velachery's Phoenix Marketcity. Ramakrishnan subsequently expanded the Half-Boiled brand into broader artist management, representing comedians beyond improv.
Artistic Identity
Half-Boiled Improv draws on the Chicago tradition of ensemble-driven unscripted comedy, with Ramakrishnan's stand-up background shaping a performance style that blends spontaneous scene work with audience-banter accessibility. The company's dual role as both a performing group and an artist management operation distinguishes it from purely performance-focused Indian improv collectives, reflecting a commercial as well as artistic orientation within the Chennai comedy market.
