LocationCape Town, Western Cape, South Africa

The Improv Cart is a Cape Town improv collective founded in 2020 by veteran improvisers Tamith Hattingh, Justine Beukes, and Thomas Dods, who collectively bring more than 35 years of performance experience. The company runs classes, workshops, and live shows with a stated mission to grow South Africa's improv community. Hattingh previously co-produced the 2017 and 2018 Mama City International Improv Festival.

History

The Improv Cart was established in 2020 as a new production and training entity within the Cape Town improv scene. Co-founder Tamith Hattingh came to the project with significant organisational experience from producing the Mama City festival, while Beukes and Dods contributed deep performance backgrounds. The organisation has appeared at Comic Con Africa and used the Quicket ticketing platform for its shows. Its corporate workshop arm serves clients seeking improvisation-based team development.

Artistic Identity

The Improv Cart positions improvisation as simultaneously an art form and a team sport, treating each live performance as a unique event built from creativity, collaboration, and spontaneity. The company's programming pushes toward experimental work that challenges what South African audiences expect from unscripted theatre, while its workshop offering makes improv techniques available in educational and corporate settings.
