Origins: Festival Circuit Ensemble

The Improv Pit's founders, described on their own site as "a bunch of rag-tag improvisers," came together to create Improv Against Humanity (later retitled Improv Attacks Humanity), a show that toured the Australian festival circuit. Regular local shows followed in Collingwood from 2018.

The Improv Pit (2020)

The ensemble formally adopted the name The Improv Pit in 2020. A public workshop program also launched during this period. Artistic Director Damien Vosk previously taught at The Improv Conspiracy, connecting The Improv Pit to Melbourne's established Chicago-style tradition.

Venues

The company performs weekly on Thursdays in Collingwood (Easey Street area, also associated with the Grace Darling Hotel on Smith Street) and operates a 45-seat blackbox theatre at Bard's Apothecary on Crossley Street in the Melbourne CBD.

The Improv Pit brings Chicago-style long-form improv to Collingwood with weekly shows and community workshops, drawing a lineage from Melbourne's established Harold-based tradition through Artistic Director Damien Vosk.

The Improv Pit's signature weekly production is Thursday Night Improv, a long-form show held at 5/48 Easey Street in Collingwood, preceded by the Improv Jam at 6:30pm where audience members can join performers on stage. The ensemble's foundational touring show was Improv Against Humanity, later retitled Improv Attacks Humanity after receiving a cease-and-desist from the card game company Cards Against Humanity. Improv Attacks Humanity toured the Australian festival circuit for several years before the company settled into weekly residency in 2018 and formally rebranded as The Improv Pit in 2020.

The Improv Pit is Melbourne's primary venue for Chicago-style long-form improv, a format less common in Australia than the Theatresports competitive model dominant in Sydney. The company's instructors trained and performed with The Second City, iO Theatre, and Upright Citizens Brigade, bringing North American long-form pedagogy directly into Melbourne's improv community through a structured three-level workshop program.

The company was founded under Artistic Director Damien Vosk alongside Managing Director Anders Gamboni, with instructors including David Tieck, Danielle Robinson, and Sharnema Nougar. By offering the only consistent weekly long-form improv show in Collingwood and running tiered classes open to the public, The Improv Pit has functioned as the primary entry point for Melburnians into Harold-style ensemble improvisation, a role previously occupied only by festival appearances and touring companies.
