The Improvisers India is a Mumbai-based improv ensemble comprising four of India's most prominent stand-up comedians: Kanan Gill, Abish Mathew, Kenny Sebastian, and Kaneez Surka, who have performed improv together since 2014. The group released India's first improv special, Something from Nothing, on Amazon Prime Video in 2018, performing over 100 shows across India, New York, and Dubai.

History

Kanan Gill, Abish Mathew, Kenny Sebastian, and Kaneez Surka began performing improvised shows together in 2014, drawing on the growing Indian stand-up comedy scene and each member's individual improv training. Over the following years the ensemble performed more than 100 shows across India, New York, and Dubai. In 2018 they produced Something from Nothing, a fully improvised hour-long special directed by Christian Capozzoli and Angshuman Ghosh and released on Amazon Prime Video, which became the highest-profile documentation of Indian improv to date. The special drew significant attention to long-form improv performance in India and elevated the individual profiles of all four members.

Artistic Identity

The Improvisers India blend music, theatre, and character-driven comedy within a fully unscripted format, with no rehearsed material in any performance. The ensemble builds scenes from audience suggestions, relying on the established interpersonal chemistry and stand-up backgrounds of its four members to generate both narrative coherence and comedic timing. Their Amazon Prime special demonstrated that long-form improv could sustain a mainstream Indian streaming audience.

Legacy

Something from Nothing (2018) on Amazon Prime Video was India's first improv special to reach a national streaming audience, giving the art form a level of mainstream visibility it had previously lacked. The four members' existing profiles as stand-up comedians made their improv ensemble the most broadly visible Indian improv act of its era.
