Bay Area Musical Improv Festival
The Bay Area Musical Improv Festival is a four-day festival dedicated entirely to musical improv, held at All Out Comedy Theater in Oakland's Uptown district. The volunteer-run nonprofit festival features shows, workshops taught by visiting musical improv teachers, and community events including an Opening Pizza Party, a Closing Party with live-band improvised karaoke, and a free potluck jam session called the Jam and Bread. Performers attend from cities across the United States including Chicago, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle.
History
The festival launched in 2024 as the successor to the West Coast Musical Improv Festival, which ran from 2015 to 2019 under Un-Scripted Theater Company. Original organizers from that earlier festival, including founding producer Molly Robertson, helped establish the new event. The 2025 edition drew over 700 audience members across 25 acts featuring 117 performers, with seven sold-out workshops.
Significance
The festival serves as the primary dedicated musical improv event in the San Francisco Bay Area, drawing performers from across the country and continuing a regional tradition of musical improv celebration that dates to 2015.
