Edinburgh Festival Fringe
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is an annual three-week performing arts festival held each August in Edinburgh, Scotland, featuring theatre, comedy, music, dance, and other genres across hundreds of venues throughout the city. It operates as an open-access festival with no central curatorial body, allowing any performer to participate upon securing a venue. The festival is recognized as the world's largest performing arts festival by volume of events and attendance, and is the origin of the term 'fringe theatre.'
History
The Fringe originated in 1947 when eight uninvited theatre groups arrived to perform alongside the newly established Edinburgh International Festival, marking the spontaneous birth of an open-access event. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, founded by artists to promote the festival's principles of experimentation and accessibility, publishes the programme and provides year-round support to performers. By 2025, the festival had grown to encompass 3,893 shows, 53,942 performances across 301 venues, and participants from 68 countries, issuing an estimated 2,604,404 tickets.
