Fliegende Funken is an annual improv theater festival held in Bremen, Germany, organized by the non-profit Fliegende Funken e.V., a collective drawn from members of various Bremen improv groups. The festival is presented bilingually in German and English, and each edition is built around a distinct theme intended to challenge artists with new questions.

History

The festival has been held annually in Bremen since 2010, with the exception of 2025. Past themes have included "Gateway Impro: Türen in die Welt" (2022, focused on ecology and globalization) and "Impro Meets Film" (2024); the 2026 edition, themed "Against the Drift," examines the tension between shallow entertainment and genuine artistic development in improvisation.

Significance

Fliegende Funken is widely described as one of the leading improvisational theater festivals in the German-speaking world.
