Breaking the Routine
Definition
A narrative technique in improvisation in which an actor interrupts the established action or situation with a new action in order to advance the scene. The disruption must relate to the routine that preceded it, giving the scene a new direction and provoking discovery. Keith Johnstone employed a version of this principle, guiding actors to play a routine until they discovered a new one through interruption. For the technique to succeed, the break cannot be arbitrary; it must grow organically from what has already been established. As described in The Ultimate Improv Book, the beginning platform only works when it is incorporated into the rest of the story, and there are infinite ways to break a routine so long as each one connects back to what came before. The Improv Illusionist highlights a classic dramatic pattern: the routine breaks at the exact moment the characters need it to work, creating an urgent problem that gives the scene forward momentum. The Improv Handbook illustrates how the technique can shift genre or reality entirely, as when a character reading a fantasy novel looks up and realizes they have entered the fantasy world. In practice, breaking the routine transforms a static or repetitive scene into one with stakes, conflict, and narrative progression.
Instructions
Performers should commit fully to the routine before breaking it, allowing the pattern to become clear to the audience so the disruption lands with impact. The break should arise from something already present in the scene rather than being imposed from outside.
Example
Two characters are happily preparing dinner together in a comfortable rhythm; just as the boss rings the doorbell, the pot roast burns, shattering the routine at precisely the moment they needed it to succeed.
