Canceling

A scene foul in which an improviser undoes or erases the effect of a previous offer, negating what has already been established. Closely related to blocking, canceling destroys positive ideas by introducing contradictions that retroactively remove established reality rather than building on it. Common forms include finding nothing where something was just established to exist, introducing implausible denials that undo a partner's contribution, or casually ignoring physical or narrative elements that were just created. Keith Johnstone's work in Impro identifies canceling as a fundamental trap that disrupts a story's momentum, and the concept is central to Theatresports, where it is called as a foul alongside blocking, low energy, and reliance on cliché. Improvisers often cancel instinctively when an offer makes them uncomfortable or when they feel a loss of control over the scene's direction. The result, as described in The Improv Handbook, is a cycle where every positive idea is destroyed by a negative one and vice versa, leaving the scene with no forward movement. Unlike a simple block, which refuses an offer before it takes hold, canceling allows the offer to land and then retroactively removes it, which can feel even more disorienting to scene partners and audiences.
