Character Journal

A character journal is a written exercise in which an improviser writes from the perspective of a character, developing that character's voice, history, worldview, and emotional landscape on the page. The practice bridges solo reflective work with ensemble performance by encouraging performers to explore dimensions of a character that may never surface explicitly in a scene but that inform choices, reactions, and physicality onstage. Entries might include diary-style reflections, letters, lists, memories, or stream-of-consciousness monologues, all written in the character's own language and logic. The technique is particularly common in long-form improvisation training, where performers sustain characters across multiple scenes or full-length shows such as harolds, armandos, or improvised plays. By spending time inhabiting a character's interior life offstage, performers often discover unexpected emotional specificity, speech patterns, and relational dynamics that enrich their scene work. Character journals also serve as a diagnostic tool: reviewing past entries can reveal habitual tendencies, helping improvisers expand their range beyond familiar character archetypes.
