Comedia Dell Arte

A form of professional theatre originating in 16th-century Italy that flourished across Europe through the 18th century, commedia dell'arte is widely regarded as the most direct ancestor of modern improvisational comedy. Troupes of trained performers worked from skeletal plot outlines called scenarios or canovacci, improvising dialogue, physical comedy, and audience interaction within a framework of fixed plot points and recurring situations. Each performer specialized in a masked stock character, such as the cunning servant Arlecchino, the miserly merchant Pantalone, the pedantic il Dottore, or the boastful soldier il Capitano, developing deep expertise in that character's voice, physicality, and comic possibilities over an entire career. Performers also maintained personal repertoires of rehearsed comic routines known as lazzi, which could be inserted into any scenario as needed; these ranged from acrobatic sight gags to elaborate verbal set pieces. The form's balance of structure and spontaneity, its emphasis on ensemble trust, its use of archetypal characters, and its reliance on heightened physicality all prefigure core principles of contemporary improv. Keith Johnstone, Viola Spolin, and other foundational improv theorists have acknowledged commedia dell'arte as a key influence, and many modern long-form formats echo its blend of predetermined framework with in-the-moment invention.
