Comedia Dell Arte Characters

A longform improvisation exercise or format in which performers adopt stock character archetypes drawn from the Italian commedia dell'arte tradition and use them as the basis for improvised scenes. The commedia dell'arte tradition, originating in 16th-century Italy, featured a fixed roster of masked characters with predictable traits, relationships, and physicalities: the cunning servant (Arlecchino), the boastful captain (Il Capitano), the miserly old man (Pantalone), the lovelorn young lovers (the Innamorati), and others. In modern improvisation training, performers study these archetypes to develop heightened physicality, clear point of view, and commitment to strong character choices. The exercise connects contemporary improvisers to the art form's historical roots in unscripted performance, since commedia dell'arte troupes worked from scenario outlines (canovacci) rather than fixed scripts, relying on lazzi (rehearsed comic bits) and spontaneous dialogue within established character dynamics. Working with these archetypes helps improvisers understand how strong, recognizable characters with clear wants and relationships generate conflict and comedy without requiring elaborate plot construction.
