Commenting

Commenting occurs when a performer steps outside the reality of a scene to remark on the action or situation rather than engaging with it from within the world of the scene. It is generally considered a distancing technique that separates both the actor and the audience from the on-stage interaction. A common form involves characters reacting to or narrating another character's behavior rather than truthfully engaging with the moment. As noted in improv pedagogy, commenting functions much like an actor stepping out of character to editorialize on the situation being performed; the resulting line is not something the character would plausibly say in context. This pattern frequently emerges when one performer acts strangely and the other players default to observing or labeling that behavior instead of responding as their characters genuinely would. Commenting can also manifest as jokes, asides, or winking references that acknowledge the theatrical frame. While commenting is occasionally used deliberately in theatrical traditions (choruses that observe and remark upon the action, for instance), in improvisation it typically signals a performer's reluctance to commit fully to the scene's reality. The habit undermines emotional stakes and pulls focus from the collaborative narrative, replacing authentic reaction with external observation.
