Embodying

The physical expression of a character, emotion, or quality through the full body, used as a core practice in improvisation training and performance. Performers explore physicality by leading with different body parts, taking on emotional states through movement, and communicating nonverbal messages through their physical presence. Research suggests that communication relies heavily on body language and tone of voice, with only a small fraction conveyed through words alone, making embodiment a critical skill for improvisers. The practice extends to subtext, with improvisers using the body to express what a character feels beneath the spoken words; in scripted improvisation and devised theatre, embodying subtext allows performers to layer unspoken meaning into scenes, creating richer dramatic tension. Mask work and identification exercises deepen this practice by asking performers to become a subject with the entire "bodymind," engaging every part of the body from head to feet in the transformation. In applied improvisation and business contexts, embodying helps participants become aware of the physical signals they project in professional interactions and learn to align their presence with their intentions.
