Gagging

In improvisation, gagging refers to a performer saying or doing something that breaks the reality of a scene in order to get a laugh, rather than advancing the story. The term describes moments where a player prioritizes an immediate comedic payoff over narrative integrity. Keith Johnstone warns that once performers have been lured into gagging or blocking, the audience is already on the way toward irritation and boredom; more than laughter, they want action. While a gag may produce a quick laugh, it signals to the audience that the performers are not committed to the world of the scene. Common forms include making anachronistic references, commenting on accent wobbles or other meta-theatrical elements, and inserting jokes that have no relationship to the established context. Gagging is considered a bad habit because the immediacy of audience laughter conditions the performer to repeat the behavior, creating a cycle that progressively hollows out the scene. The distinction between a genuinely funny moment and a gag lies in whether the humor emerges organically from the situation or is imposed upon it from outside the scene's logic. A joke that flows naturally from character and circumstance advances the narrative; a gag interrupts it.
