In improvisation, to handle an object refers to the physical and vocal manner in which a performer interacts with an imagined prop, communicating their character's emotional relationship to it through movement and voice. Rather than simply miming the presence of an object, handling requires the performer to imbue every gesture with intention: the speed, pressure, and care with which they touch, lift, or pass something reveals attitude, history, and feeling without a word of exposition.
