Hedging

In improvisation, hedging refers to the act of avoiding full commitment to an offer or idea in a scene, typically by delaying, equivocating, or stalling rather than accepting and building on what has been established. It is treated as synonymous with waffling and runs counter to the principle of immediate, unconditional acceptance. Stopping to hedge breaks the momentum of a scene and signals a performer's reluctance to surrender to the fiction. Common hedging behaviors include clearing one's throat to buy thinking time, asking clarifying questions instead of responding decisively, and using noncommittal language that neither advances nor blocks the scene.
