Heightening

The practice of making repeated elements progressively stronger each time they recur, building intensity and momentum within a scene or game. In game-based improvisation, heightening refers to taking something established and escalating it with each repetition, so that the audience experiences a satisfying sense of momentum and surprise. As Mark Jane describes, if an improviser repeats something and each time makes it a bit stronger, they will be heightening the game. The technique operates on any repeatable element: a character's emotional reaction, a physical behavior, a verbal pattern, or a situational absurdity. Rather than introducing new information, the improviser deepens commitment to what already exists, finding new angles and greater extremes within the same territory. Heightening is considered a core skill alongside listening, enabling improvisers to develop and amplify the patterns and ideas that emerge in a scene. Ron Keefe emphasizes it as part of the ensemble's responsibility: caring about the work manifests in heightening what is used and challenging one another to go further. In playwriting applications, the skill allows performers to infer and assert subtextual information from subtle indications, building layers of meaning through controlled escalation rather than lateral invention.
