Ignoring

A performance dynamic in which one actor appears deliberately unresponsive to a scene partner while actually remaining fully attuned to everything being offered. Rather than true disengagement, the technique creates a productive tension: the seemingly inattentive performer continues to react internally and physically to their partner's provocations, while the partner works to break through the apparent wall of indifference. As described in improvisational theatre practice, the performing actor allows their partner's offers to land and affect them even as they maintain the appearance of wanting to disengage or leave. The partner's role is to escalate, finding new ways to provoke a response that sustains and heightens the scene. This interplay transforms what looks like a block into an active game with clear roles for both performers. The concept also surfaces in status work, where performers hold still and stare past the audience, projecting high status through apparent indifference to those around them. In conflict resolution contexts within applied improvisation, ignoring one dimension of a dispute (whether substantive issues or emotional undercurrents) for the sake of the other typically leads to limited resolution, reinforcing the principle that genuine attentiveness, even when masked by a character's affect, remains essential to effective scene work.
