Initiation

A declaration, action, or combination of both that starts a new scene in improvisation. The initiation establishes the foundational offer of a scene: who the characters are, where they are, or what is happening. Convention holds that the first actor to enter the stage delivers the initiation, establishing the opening line or gesture to which the second actor then waits to hear and then responds. This exchange forms the heart of every improvised scene, as the initiation and response together create the first moment of collaborative discovery. Strong initiations provide enough information for a scene partner to build upon while leaving room for exploration; they might establish a relationship, an environment, or an emotional state without dictating the entire trajectory of the scene. In longform improvisation, initiations often draw on material surfaced during the opening, which sets the tone, establishes themes, and provides details to use throughout the performance. The quality of an initiation is not measured by cleverness or complexity but by how effectively it invites a partner into shared agreement. A simple, grounded statement that implies a relationship or context typically serves better than an elaborate premise. Initiations also occur at a broader level when performers bring improvisation into new settings, such as corporate culture, where the principles of declaration and collaborative response apply beyond the stage.
