A technique in which a scene opens with immediate conflict or high-stakes action before any platform, context, or narrative foundation has been established. Rather than building a base reality through who, what, and where, performers launch directly into dramatic or chaotic activity. The term originated in Theatresports communities, where it describes moments such as a sudden physical transformation or an unexpected crisis erupting in the first beat of a scene. Some sources, notably The Ultimate Improv Book, treat "instant trouble" as synonymous with "instant stakes," defined as jumping into the action right away without first creating a platform. The technique can generate immediate audience engagement and energy, but it carries a trade-off: while it produces exciting openings, the lack of established narrative context means performers must work retroactively to justify the action and build story around it. In Creating Improvised Theatre, Mark Jane identifies a subtler form of the concept, noting that two characters sharing the same objective can create instant trouble even without overt chaos, because the collision of identical wants generates organic conflict. This broader interpretation suggests that instant trouble is not limited to explosive physical choices but can arise from any scenic element that produces friction before a stable reality is in place.
