Justifying

The practice of making sense of an established offer, action, or emotion within a scene by finding a logical or narrative reason that supports it, allowing the improviser to accept and build on whatever has occurred rather than denying or ignoring it. Often expressed through the connective word "because," justifying adds detail that enriches a scene without smothering it; the improviser reveals character motivation or narrative logic in a way that feels organic rather than explanatory. In ensemble work, justifying operates as a natural extension of "yes, and": performers make discoveries, agree to them, and then supply reasons that deepen the reality being co-created. When an unexpected gift, environment, or emotional shift is introduced, the receiving performer's task is to justify it by treating it as true and finding the internal logic that makes it so. This process transforms potential confusion into coherent storytelling. Justifying also applies to physical and emotional choices; actors continue with originally established activity while fully expressing and justifying each emotion that arises, keeping the scene grounded. The skill requires a balance between spontaneity and restraint, since over-justification can stall momentum while under-justification leaves offers floating without support. In applied settings, justifying helps participants practice adaptive thinking by training the impulse to build on reality rather than resist it.
