Offer from Space

An offer from space refers to any contribution introduced into an improvised scene that arrives without prior justification or setup from within the established reality. The term encompasses unexpected entrances by offstage performers, unplanned sound effects, environmental changes, or any external input that the performers onstage did not initiate or anticipate. Unlike offers that emerge organically from the scene's internal logic, an offer from space originates outside the current frame of action and requires the onstage performers to accept, interpret, and integrate it into their reality. The concept is closely related to Keith Johnstone's broader notion of offers (any action or statement that advances the narrative) but is distinguished by its source: it comes from "space" rather than from within the scene. In some traditions, offers from space are considered risky because they can derail a scene's trajectory if poorly timed, while in others they are celebrated as gifts that force performers into heightened spontaneity. The term is most commonly used in long-form and ensemble-based improvisation where multiple performers may contribute from the wings or backline.
