Pattern

A recurring sequence of actions, behaviors, or structural elements that participants establish, repeat, and build upon during improvisation. Patterns emerge naturally in both performance and training contexts: a warm-up exercise might ask players to shake their limbs while counting down from eight, repeating the cycle with increasing speed and volume each round. In scenic work, patterns manifest as recurring characters, running jokes, or predictable escalations that audiences learn to anticipate. The pedagogical power of pattern lies in its dual nature. Establishing a pattern creates a shared framework that grounds performers and audiences alike, while deliberately breaking a pattern disrupts habitual responses and redirects attention to the present moment. This disruption can shift participants out of overthinking and into fuller engagement with their scene partners. In comedy, pattern recognition drives much of the humor: audiences laugh from awareness of a pattern and from the surprise when it is subverted or extended in unexpected ways. Applied improvisation facilitators use pattern interruption as a tool for overcoming reticence, noting that some learners follow a pattern of observation before participation that mirrors the psychological concept of emotional contagion. Whether in a sketch show's recurring structure or a single scene's game, the ability to identify, heighten, and strategically break patterns remains one of the most fundamental skills in the improviser's toolkit.
