Pimping

Pimping is the practice of deliberately putting a scene partner on the spot by asking or arranging for them to do something difficult, embarrassing, or unpleasant, often for the audience's amusement at the partner's expense. It is widely considered one of the key prohibitions in improvisation, as it prioritizes humiliating a performer over serving the scene. The term applies both to explicit requests, such as asking a partner to perform a specific difficult task, and to structural game formats designed around watching a player escape an uncomfortable situation. Some short-form games are built around this dynamic; formats like Superheroes and Controlled Actor are essentially "pimp games" where the entertainment derives from seeing a player dig out of a hole created by others. While these formats channel pimping into a consensual game structure, unstructured pimping in scene work violates the collaborative trust that improvisation depends on. The behavior can range from overt commands ("why don't you do that little dance you do") to subtler traps that force a partner into performing scatological, sexual, or technically demanding material. Groups that take themselves seriously as improvisers find that pimping corrodes ensemble trust, while audiences may initially laugh at the discomfort without recognizing the dynamic at play.
