Postponing

A common habit in improvisation where a performer delays committing to or revealing an idea within a scene instead of introducing it immediately. Postponing manifests when a player signals that something important is coming but then hedges, qualifies, or stalls rather than delivering the content. This tendency creates vagueness rather than forward momentum, as the audience registers that something is being withheld without receiving the payoff of discovery. The result is a scene that feels sluggish and disengaged, with energy draining away while the performer circles an idea they could simply state. Postponing often stems from a desire to build suspense or from fear that the idea is not strong enough, but in practice it achieves neither mystery nor protection. Audiences and scene partners alike respond to commitment and specificity; a mediocre idea delivered with conviction generates more scene momentum than a brilliant idea endlessly deferred. The antidote is immediate declaration: stating the thing, naming the emotion, or making the choice at the first opportunity rather than treating it as something to be earned through buildup.
