Premise

In improvisation, a premise is the foundational situation, assumption, or scenario from which a scene or performance operates. It establishes the core conceit that performers accept and build upon, functioning as the general outline of the scene rather than a fixed script. The 'yes, and' principle is closely tied to working from a premise, as performers accept the given situation and add to it through their interactions. A premise may be as simple as a relationship dynamic between two characters or as elaborate as an absurd conceit executed with total commitment and internal logic. In long-form work, the premise often emerges organically from an opening or suggestion, while in short-form or directed scenes, it may be assigned by a director or coach. The strength of a premise lies not in its complexity but in its clarity; a well-established premise gives performers a shared reality to explore, allowing them to discover specifics through play rather than planning. Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operas demonstrated the power of committing to the hyperlogical execution of an absurd premise, a principle that remains central to modern improv: once the foundational situation is accepted, performers find comedy and truth by following its implications with full conviction rather than undermining it.
