Rehearsal

A scheduled session in which performers prepare material, develop scenes, warm up, and refine their work before a show. In improvisation, rehearsal serves multiple purposes beyond traditional theatre preparation: it is a space for building individual skills, working through games and exercises, fostering group cohesion, and developing the trust necessary for spontaneous performance. Improvisers use rehearsal time to explore formats, develop protagonists, experiment with genre work, and practice creative transitions. Physical warm-ups, including relaxation techniques and movement exercises, help performers shed the stress of their day and arrive mentally present for the creative work ahead. Rehearsal also functions as a laboratory where players build a shared vocabulary of references, establish group dynamics, and create a base of experience from which to draw during unscripted performance. The social and emotional dimensions of rehearsal matter as much as the technical ones; performers who disengage from the process or isolate themselves during rehearsal sessions undermine the collective energy that fuels strong improvised work. Regular, committed rehearsal transforms a collection of individual players into an ensemble capable of intuitive collaboration onstage.
