Reincorporating

Often described as one of the foundational disciplines of long-form improvisation, reincorporating is the technique of bringing back earlier details, images, objects, or story elements from an improvised scene or show in order to give the narrative shape and satisfying closure. Each new action in a scene creates an open loop, and closing that loop by returning to past material integrates the story and often earns audience applause. As Keith Johnstone observed, an improviser must "balance" and "give shape" to a narrative by "remembering incidents that have been shelved and reincorporating them." Charna Halpern reinforced this view, noting that "long form is all about listening and reincorporating," positioning the skill as even more essential than adherence to any particular structure like the Harold. In practice, reincorporation serves multiple purposes: it rewards attentive audience members who recognize the callback, it provides performers with material when they feel stuck (since returning to an established detail is always a valid move), and it transforms a sequence of unrelated scenes into a unified whole. The technique applies equally to short-form games and long-form narratives. Alongside listening, it is considered the connective tissue that turns individual moments into satisfying storytelling.
