Sidecoaching

A technique in which a director, instructor, or offstage player gives brief verbal instructions to performers during a scene or exercise without stopping the action. Originated in Viola Spolin's theater games methodology, sidecoaching serves to reinforce focus, redirect attention, and guide players to deepen their work in the moment. The technique functions as a real-time feedback loop: the coach observes the players' engagement with the point of concentration and offers short, direct prompts such as 'Keep up the conversation!' or 'Keep talking!' to sustain or shift the ensemble's energy. Spolin herself advised players to 'listen to my voice but don't pay any attention to it,' emphasizing that sidecoaching should bypass the intellectual mind and reach the player's intuitive, physical self. Players are expected to incorporate the coaching without breaking from the scene, making eye contact with the instructor, or acknowledging the direction explicitly. In rehearsal and workshop settings, sidecoaching helps directors build ensemble cohesion and escalate the pace or stakes of an exercise gradually. Asaf Ronen dedicates an entire chapter to the practice in 'Directing Improv,' underscoring its importance as a core directorial skill. Beyond traditional theater games, sidecoaching appears in applied improvisation contexts, where facilitators use it during residencies to emphasize listening, scene work, and building with what emerges in the room.
