Space Object

An imaginary object created and manipulated through pantomime during a scene, made to appear real through the performer's physical interaction with it. Also referred to as "space object work" or simply "space work," the technique requires performers to endow invisible objects with consistent size, weight, texture, and behavior so that both scene partners and the audience can perceive them as tangible. Viola Spolin, the earliest and most influential practitioner of the technique, described it as a way of projecting the inner self into the visible world: when one player handles an invisible object and another player recognizes and responds to it, the activity makes visible the sharing and connection between them. The practice serves multiple functions in performance. It establishes environment and grounds scenes in physical reality, gives performers a concrete focus that deepens concentration, and can generate narrative momentum; as David Raitt notes, simply beginning an activity with a space object can open a pathway into a working scene. Space objects also invite collaborative discovery: in Del Close's teaching, when one player mimes a common object and a partner takes it, the object can transform through the second player's use of it, revealing new possibilities. The discipline of maintaining consistent object work throughout a scene is considered a foundational skill in most improv training traditions.
