Space Work

A foundational performance technique involving the handling, manipulating, and interacting with imaginary objects and settings on stage, giving them physical weight, dimension, and spatial reality through precise physicality. Rooted in Viola Spolin's training methodology, space work requires performers to make the audience believe in objects that are not physically present. The technique is closely related to pantomime but is distinguished by its emphasis on giving imaginary objects defined space and consistent dimension rather than simply miming actions. Performers must maintain awareness of where objects exist in the playing area, how heavy or large they are, and how they behave when touched or moved. Strong space work builds the environment of a scene, grounding both the performers and the audience in a shared imaginary reality. At The Second City, where Spolin's influence ran deepest, performers like Dick Schaal practiced space work several times a week in workshops before applying it nightly on stage. Beyond theatrical settings, space work serves as a training tool for attention and presence; exercises that emphasize interacting with imaginary objects teach participants to focus on their scene partners and surroundings rather than retreating into their own heads.
