Walk-Through

A rehearsal practice in which performers physically move through their blocking and stage positions, often while reading from scripts (sides). The walk-through allows a cast to familiarize themselves with the stage layout, set pieces, and spatial relationships before a full run or performance. In Viola Spolin's structured workshop methodology, walk-throughs are integrated into the rehearsal sequence alongside concentration exercises; performers walk through each act with sides while absorbing the general stage plan, layering in awareness of color, other actors, weather, and the visualized stage set. This graduated approach helps players internalize both the physical environment and the imaginative world of the piece. In improvisation, where no script exists and the stage configuration may change from venue to venue, a quick walk-through of the performance space is recommended as standard practice before every show. Even during a regular run on the same stage, conditions can shift: furniture gets rearranged, cables appear, lighting changes. Walking the space helps performers identify potential hazards, note available entrances and exits, gauge sightlines, and build a shared spatial vocabulary with their ensemble. This simple habit supports both safety and confidence, freeing players to commit fully to the work once the show begins.
