Warm-Up
Definition
A preliminary activity or series of exercises performed at the beginning of a rehearsal, workshop, class, or performance to prepare participants physically, mentally, and emotionally for the creative work ahead. Warm-ups serve multiple functions in improvisation: they build collective energy, establish a judgment-free environment, sharpen focus, and transition performers from everyday consciousness into a state of creative readiness. Common warm-up formats include physical movement, word association games, vocal exercises, and group activities that encourage spontaneity and ensemble awareness. Physical warm-ups may incorporate choreographic or embodied exercises tailored to the material at hand, while mental warm-ups like word association help participants loosen habitual thinking patterns and respond more freely. In applied improvisation settings, warm-ups also function as tools for breaking down social barriers and shifting participants out of rigid workplace modes. Instructors frequently use warm-ups to reinforce a specific acting skill or to support their broader teaching philosophy. A well-designed warm-up can set the tone for an entire session; when failure is celebrated rather than penalized, even a simple exercise can generate remarkable positive energy in a room. Warm-ups are equally valuable in devised theatre, where they may evolve directly into the creative material of a performance.
Instructions
Select warm-ups that match the goals of the session: physical exercises for body-centered work, word games for mental agility, and group activities for ensemble cohesion. Celebrate mistakes openly during warm-ups to build positive energy and model the risk-taking mindset that improvisation demands.
Example
Before beginning scene work, the instructor led a word association game as a mental warm-up to establish a judgment-free environment and encourage creative thinking among participants.
