Founding (1993)

City Theater Company was founded in Wilmington, Delaware in 1993, establishing itself as Delaware's primary intimate performing arts venue. The company built a programming identity around contemporary comedies, new works, and classic musicals in a black box theater format, operating on Wilmington's riverfront arts district.

Fearless Improv and Expanded Programming

City Theater developed Fearless Improv as its dedicated improv ensemble, operating as a traveling comedy team presenting monthly shows and improv classes throughout Delaware. In September 2021 CTC entered a partnership with The Delaware Contemporary, which became the new home for mainstage productions, expanding the company's institutional footprint.

Ongoing Operations

City Theater Company continues to operate as Delaware's primary intimate performing arts organization, now in its fourth decade, with Fearless Improv as its dedicated improv component serving audiences statewide.

City Theater Company presents contemporary theatre in an intimate black box format alongside the Fearless Improv program, which offers monthly traveling improv shows and classes throughout Delaware. The organization functions as a broad theatrical company rather than a dedicated improv house, with improv programming as a complement to its mainstage work.
