ImprovBroadway was founded in Provo, Utah in 2014, positioning itself as Utah's first full-time comedy theater and school and locating at 496 North 900 East in the city. The theater built its programming around improvised musicals blending short-form games, scenes, and songs into a family-friendly, clean comedy format intended to be accessible to the large family-oriented audience base in Utah County. The company auditions a professional cast every six months, maintaining a rotating roster of performers rather than a fixed company. In 2015, it was voted Utah's best improv troupe.

As the first dedicated full-time comedy venue in Utah, ImprovBroadway established the infrastructure for ongoing live comedy in a state that had lacked a permanent home for the form. Its emphasis on clean, family-friendly material has differentiated it from urban improv companies with more adult-oriented programming, building a distinct audience that includes youth and family attendees. The six-month audition cycle has created a training pathway for Utah performers to enter professional comedy, contributing to a local pool of experienced improvisers.
