Founding as ComedySportz Utah (1999)

Tonia and Curt Doussett founded ComedySportz Utah in March 1999, acquiring the Utah franchise rights to the ComedySportz competitive short-form improv format established by Dick Chudnow in Milwaukee in 1984. The company launched performances in Provo, bringing audience-suggestion-based competitive improv to the Utah Valley.

Rebrand to ComedyBox Utah

The Doussetts later separated from the ComedySportz franchise network and rebranded the company as ComedyBox Utah, retaining the competitive two-team format. The company has operated from 36 West Center Street in Provo, also maintaining a Midvale location at various points.

ComedyBox Utah presents competitive short-form improv in the ComedySportz tradition, with two teams competing for audience approval through improv games. The ComedyBox Improv Academy extends the organization's training work in Utah Valley.

As the primary dedicated improv comedy venue and school in Utah County for over twenty-five years, ComedyBox Utah has introduced short-form competitive improv to generations of Utah audiences who might not have otherwise encountered live improvisational comedy. The organization's longevity in a market not typically associated with the national comedy circuit reflects the Doussetts' sustained commitment to building local comedy infrastructure. The ComedyBox Improv Academy has trained community performers across multiple cohorts, and the venue's format emphasizes family-accessible comedy consistent with the cultural values of its Provo audience.
