The Bit Theater

Founding (2021)

Michael and Kelsey Bradt opened The Bit Theater in September 2021 at 4034 Fox Valley Center Drive in Aurora, Illinois, in a space that previously housed Comedy Shrine and before that an arcade called Enchanted Castle. The Bradts launched with a long-form improv focus and a commitment to accessible training, establishing a policy of holding at least one scholarship spot per class for students who cannot afford tuition.

Programming Growth

From its opening, the Bit expanded well beyond long-form improv to include short-form improv, sketch comedy, stand-up, burlesque, drag, straight plays, and musicals. Named ensemble shows include The Alvy and MoXXie (long-form), Accidental Jackhammer (short-form), Sketchpants, and Deadliest Sketch. The two-theater building includes a full-service bar and lounge.

Ownership Transition (2024)

In 2024 Michael and Kelsey Bradt relocated out of the area and transferred ownership of The Bit to Patrick Stinson, who continued operations under the same name and programming model.

Community Programming (2026)

In early 2026, The Bit Theater received regional media coverage from WBEZ Chicago for offering inclusive improv programming for young adults with special needs, reflecting the venue's expansion into community-focused applied improv.

The Bit Theater programs long-form and short-form improv, sketch, and variety performance in a two-theater Aurora venue. Its training curriculum covers long-form improv, short-form improv, character development, and sketch writing across multi-level class tracks, with a structural commitment to scholarship access.

The Bit Theater presents a diverse slate of recurring productions anchored by long-form improv. A Little Bit of Music is a fully improvised musical show; TBD&D is a fantasy role-playing improv production inspired by Dungeons and Dragons; and A Bit Late is an improvised late-night talk show format. The Alvy is a recurring long-form showcase named as a house ensemble vehicle, and BitFlix, MoXXie, Llama DAMMIT, and Picture Perfect are additional named ensemble productions. In the short-form and variety space, Triple Threat presents three different troupes in a single evening, Accidental Jackhammer runs competitive short-form games, and Mansplaining is a variety-format show. Sketch productions include Sketchpants and Deadliest Sketch. The venue also presents stand-up comedy, scripted plays, drag shows, burlesque, and musical theater, reflecting the expansion from its original long-form-only focus.

The Bit Theater opened in September 2021 when Michael and Kelsey Bradt took over the space at 4034 Fox Valley Center Drive in Aurora, Illinois -- a venue previously occupied by Comedy Shrine and, before that, the Enchanted Castle arcade -- and relaunched it with a focus on long-form improvisation alongside an open-access educational mission that reserves at least one free scholarship spot in every class offered. Operating as a two-theater building, The Bit expanded rapidly beyond its initial improv focus to encompass the full range of live comedy and theatrical performance. In June 2024, the Bradts relocated out of the area and transferred ownership to Patrick Stinson, a theater professional with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theater from Millikin University whose management experience included the Paper Mill Theatre in Lincoln, New Hampshire, and the Clinton Area Showboat in Iowa. Stinson's stewardship broadened the programming further while preserving the inclusion and access commitments established by the founders, including diversity and inclusion training for all performers, instructors, and staff. The theater has developed an active community platform through a dedicated Discord server, and its position as the successor to the long-running Comedy Shrine venue gives it an institutional connection to more than two decades of suburban Chicago comedy history.
