Tokyo Comedy Store is a bilingual improv company and school founded in 1994 as Tokyo Comedy Club, operating Improvazilla monthly shows at Crocodile in Shibuya and running Impro Dojo workshops, with Studio Gokko opening in 2019.
History
Tokyo Comedy Store was founded in 1994 under the name Tokyo Comedy Club, establishing bilingual improv performance in Tokyo during the early development of the global improv circuit. The company grew over three decades to encompass the Improvazilla monthly show at Crocodile in Shibuya, the Impro Dojo workshop series drawing on Johnstone, Second City, iO, and Annoyance methodologies, and the 2019 opening of Studio Gokko, a dedicated black box theatre and school space. The breadth of methodological coverage in Impro Dojo positioned Tokyo Comedy Store as an institution connecting practitioners to the full range of North American improv traditions.
Artistic Identity
Tokyo Comedy Store combines regular public performance with pedagogically comprehensive training, drawing on Johnstone, Second City, iO, and Annoyance methodologies to offer the full spectrum of improv approaches within a bilingual programme.
Legacy
Founded in 1994, Tokyo Comedy Store established English-language improv in Japan and built over three decades the most comprehensive improv training programme in the country, connecting Tokyo's scene to every major strand of the North American improv tradition.
