ComedySportz Houston Founding (1990)

Dianah Dulany founded ComedySportz Houston on November 8, 1990, premiering at the River Cafe in the Montrose neighborhood. The company brought the competitive short-form improv format, established by Dick Chudnow in Milwaukee in 1984, to Houston audiences.

Venue History

The company operated from River Cafe in Montrose (1990), Treebeards in downtown Houston (1994), Lambert Hall (1998), and Town and Country Boulevard (2004) before opening the CSz Arena at 2201 Preston Street in EaDo, East Downtown Houston, in 2016.

Houston School of Improv and High School League

ComedySportz Houston established the Houston School of Improv as its training wing, and in 1995 launched a ComedySportz High School League that grew to include more than eighteen participating schools across multiple Houston-area districts, becoming one of the largest high school improv programs in the country.

Rebrand and Relocation (2025)

In July 2025 the organization rebranded from ComedySportz Houston to The Good Friend Theater and relocated from EaDo to 8301 Jones Road in Jersey Village in the Cy-Fair area. The sold-out opening night at the new venue was July 22, 2025, and an official ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on January 17, 2026, when the Mayor of Jersey Village declared it ComedySportz and Good Friend Theater Day.

The Good Friend Theater presents the ComedySportz competitive short-form format with a family-friendly programming commitment, alongside the Houston School of Improv curriculum and one of the country's largest ComedySportz High School Leagues. The 2025 rebrand expanded the organization's identity while retaining the competitive improv format that has anchored its programming since 1990.

ComedySportz is the company's flagship show, a competitive short-form format in which two teams compete in improv games judged by the audience, running every Friday and Saturday and billed as Houston's longest-running improv comedy show. Improv! The Musical is a fully improvised musical comedy created from a single audience-suggested title, featuring spontaneous storylines, songs, and choreography. The Bard's Bounty is an audience-directed improvised fantasy adventure set in the fictional land of Improvzaria. Maestro is an elimination-format competitive showcase in which ten comedians compete in successive rounds decided by audience vote. The Good Friend Comedy Hour presents rotating long-form ensemble teams in a showcase format. The Great Game Show Mash-Up blends formats drawn from The Price is Right and Family Feud with live audience participation.

The company was founded on November 8, 1990 by Dianah Dulany as the Houston franchise of ComedySportz, the competitive short-form improv format created by Dick Chudnow in Milwaukee in 1984, which itself drew on Keith Johnstone's Theatresports model. Dulany opened the first shows at the River Café in Montrose, making ComedySportz Houston the city's first competitive improv franchise. The company followed its audience through six venue changes over 35 years: from the River Café to Treebeards downtown in 1994, Lambert Hall in 1998, a self-contained arena on Town and Country Boulevard in 2004, the CSz Arena in the East Downtown arts district in 2016, and finally to a newly constructed home in Jersey Village, which opened under the name The Good Friend Theater on July 19, 2025. The ComedySportz High School League, established in 1995, grew to include schools across the Cy-Fair, Houston, Katy, and Spring Branch districts and has trained thousands of student performers over three decades. The Houston School of Improv, operated alongside the main venue, runs a four-level curriculum and has served tens of thousands of students and corporate clients, with the company reporting service to 43 Fortune 500 companies in a recent year. The Good Friend Theater name was chosen to reflect the role the company played in its executive director's life when he sought community, and signals a transition from franchise branding toward an independent identity while retaining the ComedySportz format as its central production.
