Founding (2010)

OTRimprov began in 2010 as a loose collective of Cincinnati improvisers seeking performance space and community. The group initially headlined shows for the "Little Big Night" series at Know Theatre of Cincinnati before formalizing a partnership under Know Theatre's Jackson Street Market resource-sharing program for emerging companies. This arrangement gave OTRimprov independent producing capability while sharing the Know's Underground space in the Over-the-Rhine arts district.

Operating in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood gives OTRimprov a distinctive community identity rooted in one of the city's most historically significant arts and cultural districts. The company's institutional home at Know Theatre Underground situates it within the city's established independent theatre infrastructure.

Ongoing Operations

OTRimprov continues to operate at Know Theatre Underground in Over-the-Rhine as Cincinnati's long-form ensemble collective, distinct from Improv Cincinnati (Clifton Comedy Theatre) which operates separately across the city.

OTRimprov presents long-form ensemble improv rooted in the community-oriented tradition of the Over-the-Rhine arts district. The collective's identity emphasizes independence and ensemble development within the Know Theatre's collaborative institutional framework. As a producing organization rather than a school or full training center, OTRimprov focuses on performance and ensemble cultivation.

OTRimprov structures its performances as two-act evenings at Know Theatre Underground. The first act draws on short-form game formats in the tradition of competitive panel improv, while the second act is an extended long-form set running approximately 45 minutes and built around a different structure each performance. The Chronicle is the company's best-documented recurring long-form: storytellers from the Cincinnati community, including Rollergirls, Cincinnati Fringe artists, and members of the band Bad Veins, share personal narratives that the ensemble then translates into improvised scenes in real time. The company has also participated in programming under the Little Big Night comedy series at Know Theatre, where it performed as Off the Rocks Improv before establishing its independent identity.

OTRimprov and TrueTheatre are among the independent entities to have graduated from Know Theatre's incubator structure, demonstrating that the Jackson Street Market model could sustain ongoing partnerships rather than simply launching companies that eventually moved on. The company's continued presence in the Know Underground has kept long-form improv embedded in one of Cincinnati's most active arts districts, while The Chronicle format established a distinctive contribution to the genre by foregrounding authentic community voice rather than generic audience suggestion.
