Founding (1991)

SAK Comedy Lab was founded in 1991 by Don Ferguson, Julie Barr, and Rod Friedman in Orlando, Florida. The name "SAK" derives from the improvisers' surnames (S, A, K). The company established itself as the primary improv venue in Central Florida, operating in the Church Street entertainment district before moving to its current location at 29 S. Orange Ave in downtown Orlando.

Growth and Signature Programming

Over three decades, SAK developed a stable of original shows and trained generations of Central Florida performers. Its signature production, "Duel of Fools," pits two improv teams against each other in audience-scored competition and has run continuously for years. SAK also became a prominent training centre, offering classes to adult and youth performers throughout the region.

Youth and Education Programs

SAK maintains one of the more established youth improv programs in the Southeast, running teen ensembles and school outreach. The company has operated continuously since 1991, making it one of the longest-running improv venues in Florida.

SAK Comedy Lab presents short-form audience-interactive improv in the tradition established by ComedySportz and Theatresports. Its signature "Duel of Fools" format organises competition between two teams with audience scoring. SAK also offers long-form performances alongside its competitive format, and its training curriculum spans beginner through advanced levels for adult and youth students.

SAK Comedy Lab's signature show, Duel of Fools, has run on Friday and Saturday nights for nearly three decades, pitting two professional improv teams against each other in scenes, sketches, and songs built entirely from audience suggestions, with the crowd voting for a winner. The Wine Down Show, staged on Wednesday evenings, pairs improv comedy with two complimentary drinks for an accessible midweek entertainment format. King of the Hill features five improvisers competing for audience approval in rapid-fire set changes. SAK University, the organization's training division, mounts regular student showcase performances across multiple levels. The theater also runs an annual Summer Camp program for younger performers.

SAK's origins date to 1977, when a small troupe of performers with evangelical street theater backgrounds began entertaining at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. The company grew to twelve members and relocated to Florida in 1982 after Disney scouts discovered them at a festival in Largo, leading to seven years producing shows at Walt Disney World's EPCOT Center in the United Kingdom and Italy pavilions. When the Disney contract ended in 1989, founders Don Ferguson, Julie Barr, and Rod Friedman channeled that professional experience into opening SAK Comedy Lab on Church Street in downtown Orlando in 1991, initially in a 99-seat venue that has since expanded to a 250-seat theater drawing more than 50,000 patrons annually. The New York Times called it a venue where "the spirit of improv lives."

SAK's most celebrated alumnus is Wayne Brady, who began improvising and teaching at SAK in 1991 before moving to Los Angeles in 1995 and winning three Emmy Awards. Paula Pell spent sixteen years as a Saturday Night Live writer before acting on 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation; Aaron Shure earned Emmy recognition as a writer and producer on Everybody Loves Raymond and The Office; and Paul Vogt was a lead cast member on Mad TV from 2002 to 2005. Jonathan Mangum toured extensively with Wayne Brady and Drew Carey, while Brendan Jennings went on to perform with Second City and lead Cook County Social Club, named Chicago's best improv group by the Chicago Reader in 2010.
