Theatresports

Active

Theatresports is a competitive form of improvisational theatre in which opposing teams create spontaneous scenes based on audience suggestions, with judges awarding points for narrative structure, technical skill, and entertainment value. The format uses structured matches moderated by a referee, including the Rookie Match, the Regulation Challenge Match, and Free Impro, and is associated with the International Theatresports Institute, founded in 1998 to standardize and promote the practice. It has also been adapted for educational purposes, including youth programs focused on social skills, creativity, and emotional development.

History

Theatresports was created by British-Canadian theatre director Keith Johnstone in 1977 at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, inspired by the participatory energy of professional wrestling matches. Early performances were held at Calgary's Loose Moose Theatre Company, where tickets were refunded if audiences deemed shows unsatisfactory. The format expanded globally as a franchise, establishing leagues in North America, Europe, Australia, and beyond, and influenced improvisational comedy programs including Whose Line Is It Anyway?
