Founding as Seattle Theatresports League (1982–1983)

The first Theatresports performance in Seattle took place in 1982, and in 1983 three separate Seattle improv groups merged to form the Seattle Theatresports League, making it the first organisation in the United States to present Keith Johnstone's competitive improv format. The merged company incorporated as a nonprofit and performed on Monday nights at Swannie's Comedy Underground before moving to the Intiman Playhouse.

Renaming and Growth (1988–1991)

In 1988, the company adopted the name Unexpected Productions. In 1991, the company established its permanent home at the Market Theater, 1428 Post Alley in Pike Place Market, a venue that has anchored the company's operations ever since.

Festival and Ongoing Operation

In 1997, Unexpected Productions launched the Seattle International Festival of Improvisation, which has run annually since. The company also operates an Unexpected Communications division offering corporate improv programmes.

Unexpected Productions is rooted in Keith Johnstone's Theatresports format: competitive, game-based improvisation with audience scoring and team structure. The company's long residency at the Market Theater in Pike Place Market has connected it to Seattle's arts community and tourist infrastructure simultaneously, making it both a neighbourhood institution and a visitor destination. The Seattle Theatresports format, running continuously since 1983, is the longest-running show in Seattle.

Seattle Theatresports is the competitive long-form improv format licensed from Keith Johnstone, running Friday and Saturday nights at the Market Theater and documented as the longest-running show in Seattle, celebrating its 36th anniversary in 2019. Seattle Suite: An Improvised Neil Simon Comedy is a fully improvised farce set in a single hotel suite that generates three distinct stories per night in the style of Neil Simon. Loose Cannons Improv is a Thursday-night show built around featured performers and open audience interaction. Show Your Game: An Improvised Game Show is a Sunday series in which improvisers and audience members face challenges designed around guest experts' obscure areas of knowledge. Spellbound is a fully improvised romantasy serial building a new magical world each run. No Strings Attached is an adult puppet improv show running Sunday evenings. The Seattle International Festival of Improvisation is an annual international festival hosted by Unexpected Productions that has drawn troupes from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Unexpected Productions began as the Seattle Theatresports League in 1982 and 1983, becoming the first organisation in the United States to perform Keith Johnstone's Theatresports format, which Johnstone had developed in Calgary. The company incorporated as a non-profit theatre in 1988 and has operated from the Market Theater at 1428 Post Alley in Pike Place Market since May 1991, making it Seattle's oldest continuously operating improv venue. Over the following decade the company mounted more than forty original seasonal shows and more than forty long-form improvisational works alongside its three ongoing weekly productions.

The company's international reach has extended through touring performances in New Zealand, Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, Canada, and across the United States. As the steward of Theatresports in the US market, Unexpected Productions has served as a model for how a Johnstone-licensed format can anchor a durable non-profit theatre institution. Artistic direction has been held by Tony Beeman, with artistic associates Obadiah Freeman and Jaclyn Schuenzel continuing the training and ensemble programmes that have produced the company's rotating performer pool.
